Provenance · Father's father

Vincenzo Lambiase

I carry his name and almost nothing else. Every field on his leaf is empty, and every one of them was answerable while he was alive. That is not the fault of an archive. It is the reason this table exists instead of staying a good intention.

The man whose name I have

I am named after him and that is the whole of what I know.

Not the year he was born. Not the village. Not what he did with his hands for fifty years, not whether he was tall, not what he sounded like, not what he thought of anything. There is one sentence of him in existence and I am about to write it: he married Raffaella Vigorito and they had three children, and one of them is my father.

That is it. That is a life reduced to a connective — a man who exists on this table as the thing that links two other names.

Why this leaf is the shortest and matters most

Every other person on this table has at least a date. He has none, and he is the one I am named for, which makes his the leaf that says most clearly what this whole book is arguing.

Because none of this is the fault of an archive. There is no fire, no lost register, no war that took the papers. The information existed, in ordinary rooms, in people who were alive and willing, for decades. It was simply never asked for and never written down, and then the people who had it stopped being available, one at a time, quietly, in the normal way.

A family does not lose its memory. It declines to write it down, which looks like nothing at all until it looks like this.

What can still be done

His wife is alive. My father is alive. Between them they hold his birth year, his village, his trade, his voice, and probably a photograph in a drawer.

Every blank above is a question with a living answer, and it will stay that way for a while and then it will not. That is the entire argument of this page, and he is the proof of it.
